Why the wolf?
Have you wondered why the wolf is the villain of this story? Why not a lion, a tiger, a bear, a coyote, or even a hyena? The story was written at a time when most people lived on farms. They lived in constant fear from wolves attacking their sheep and other farm animals. An early story describes the wolf as a cruel creature that uses trickery to acquire its victims. Had Little Red Riding Hood not met the wolf in a public place during their first meeting, it was believed that the wolf would have eaten her on the spot. The world is a different place today. We don't think of wolves as evil creatures anymore. If we were to write this story today, who do you think our villain might be? Host: kyle hicks macdonald |
