Enilorac: May 14, 1861 Dear Diary, BAM! I can almost hear the gunshots of the war! A war for freedom of slaves will begin. I hope this will all end with freedom for Mama, Papa, little four year old Elizabeth, and me. I am forced to work as a slave on "Master" Hutchings' farm, and have been for ten years, ever since I was six years old. The couple I work for....I do not wish to call them "Master" and "Mistress" once more. If I am freed, the only person I will miss if I go away is Emma, the daughter of my mistress. She taught me how to read. SHE taught me how to write. SHE taught me that I am a unique person and I deserve better than what I am doing! If this war is not over soon (I am getting really impatient), I will run away to Canada. That is where freedom lies. Emma is my best friend, she knows what I plan to do. She is disgusted with what her parents are doing and wants to run away with me. But I have heard of someone who ran away. He was caught and beaten. I am so scared. When will freedom come?
